Sponsored Parent visa (870)
The Sponsored Parent visa, Subclass 870 is a visa that allows parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens to reside in Australia temporarily for up to ten years cumulatively.
Requirements:
Visa applicant requirements:
- must be outside Australia at the time of application;
- be a biological, adoptive, step-parent or parent-in-law of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen;
- demonstrate financial capacity to fund the duration of your stay in Australia and to maintain private health insurance;
- sponsorship has been approved before lodging visa application
- meet health and character requirements
Sponsor requirements:
- sponsor must be a resident in Australia for at least four years prior to the visa application;
- sponsor must be at least 18 years old;
- sponsor must meet the ‘income test’ requirement of AUD $83,450 (subject to annual indexation). Spousal income may be combined to meet this requirement.
Benefits of the Sponsored Parent visa, Subclass 870:
- unlike the permanent parent visas there you do not need to meet ‘the balance of family test’;
- unlike the permanent parent visas there you do not need to provide an assurance of support;
- allows for significantly longer stay periods (3 or 5 years at a time) than a Tourist visa
Places available:
- This visa is capped at 15,000 places per financial year. If a cap is reached in a program year, no further visas will be granted in that program year
Permanent Parent visas
- Non-Contributory Parent (Permanent) visa, Subclass 103 & 804;
- Contributory Parent (Permanent) visa, Subclass 143, 173, 864, 884
Note: a parent cannot apply for a permanent Parent visa while holding a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa, Subclass 870.
